New studies suggest that individuals who experience three critical symptoms of insomnia are over three times more likely to develop heart failure. The symptoms are: trouble falling asleep, problem staying asleep, and not waking up feeling refreshed in the morning. Doctors have yet to find a direct link between insomnia and heart failure, but it is suggested that the activated stress response from insomnia might negatively affect heart function. Risk of heart failure is even greater among individuals with combined insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
