Growing up in a fast-paced economically driven country, Singapore has always had a cookie-cutter approach to education – churning out mass graduates to supplement the workforce. Naturally then, stereotypical professions in the banking and finance industry becomes the preferred career choice. This summer however, I had the privilege, together with 4 students from Singapore Management University, to get a taste of the startup scene at Bioscape Digital. And it was an amazing experience.
After an arduous 20-hour flight from Singapore, we arrived in Atlanta on 23rd May bright and beaming! After weeks of courses at Emory University, we began our long-awaited internship on 15th June. From the off, we were awestruck by the pace and intensity that envelops the company. Everyone seems to be glued to their screens working on something. Immediately, a discussion was held to designate the work. Thereafter, our internship began to take shape, becoming a wholesome experience.
In marketing, we had the privilege of working with Agustin (Business Analyst) who even though was away in Colombia, made the effort to welcome and assimilate us into Bioscape. With him, we dabbled on several projects that open our eyes to how a startup can effectively market itself. It definitely helped us gain insights into the inner workings of a startup and gain experience we can never get with a big corporate firm.
One of the many contributing reasons for the success of a startup lies in the founder himself. It is no wonder Bioscape has managed to achieve the milestones it has today. With Stuart, we bear witness to the drive and focus he brings to the company. Stuart himself is Chair of the Mentor Committee at Goizueta and is an excellent mentor. Under him, we were pushed to generate ideas that can help increase sales for Bioscape. Halfway through our internship, Sean (VP Healthcare Strategy) who coincidentally as an Emory alumni joined Bioscape. With him, we redesigned and streamlined Bioscape’s 2-pager summary. Sean was engaging, relatable and always strived to make the internship experience a better one for us. We can’t thank him enough!
Our time at Bioscape has definitely been an extremely fruitful experience. We have gain so much just by working with such incredible individuals that could well propel this company into greater heights. Although our time has come to an end with Bioscape, our journeys continue and we hope one day, we will again cross paths with Bioscape and its amazing people.
