A new social media policy issued by the American College of Physicians and the Federation of State Medical Boards addresses doctors’ use of social media as a means of patient communication. The policy urges physician’s to utilize secure online patient portals and other related resources. With the rise of social media, it is easier to communicate through emails, Facebook posts, and text messages but doctors are urged to limit and monitor communication to ensure patient confidentiality. Doctors are also encouraged to be aware of the institute or organization they represent when making opinionated or even informative comments and responses online.
