Emory cardiologist Nanette Wenger invents a simple weight loss plan called the “250/250″ plan. The plan aims for an individual to lose one pound a week by cutting 250 calories per day, while also increasing physical activity to burn 250 calories per day. Tips to burn an extra 250 calories include parking further away from the store, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Physical activities that would burn 250 calories include: 40 min of brisk walking, 25 min of moderate intensity cycling, 45 min pushing a lawnmower, 30 min of a group exercise class, and 55 min of weight lifting. Tips to cut calories from your diet include: substituting whole fruits over fruit juice, raw vegetables instead of potato chips, smaller portions, and elimination of mayonnaise and cheese. The weight loss plan is praised for its “realistic” approach and its emphasis on a combination of decreased caloric intake and increased physical fitness.
