This week we are highlighting one of the applications featured on our Patient Engagement Tablet. YoDoc is a communication tool for people with speech impairment due to critical medical conditions. We had the opportunity to interview their founding team and are excited to share the story of this critical tool that “gives your loved ones a voice.”
Put yourself in the shoes of ICU doctor, Dr. Chandar Abboy. He has several patients on ventilators. As you can imagine, his day is quite busy. He is in a room with a patient who is struggling to communicate her needs to him. She is trying to write out what she needs on a pad, which is very difficult for patients on ventilators to do. Dr. Abboy is in a hurry to get to several other critically ill patients in the unit that need his attention. He felt torn as he rushed out. It was at this moment that the idea of YoDoc came to life.
Once Bioscape Digital learned about this application, our team was quick to partner with YoDoc to provide this functionality on our Patient Engagement Platform. The application can be presented in several native languages, English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Hindi, and the team is adding languages as needed. Prompted by hospital feedback, YoDoc is in the process of developing a version of the tool that addresses COVID.
Since March, demand for the application has skyrocketed. YoDoc has seen an increase in downloads of over 460%. The product could not play a more important role during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an easy to use, low cost application that provides seamless access to critical communication functions. When asked, “How do you see technology, such as YoDoc, transforming healthcare in the next few years?” the YoDoc team explained, “We believe this type of app will revolutionize the healthcare industry. It will lower costs, increase healthcare worker productivity, and reduce exposure of the healthcare worker to close-contact, contagious patients.”
