The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Heart Association (AHA), and the American College of Cardiology (ACC), establish new guidelines for the use of aspirin for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes. Studies show that aspirin therapy fails to have any significant reduction of cardiovascular events among diabetic patients, however doctors should use their best judgment when treating a diabetic patient. There are various risk-assessment tools such as the UKPDS Risk Engine, the ARIC Coronary Heart Disease Risk Calculator, and the ADA Risk Assessment Tool that can be used for diabetic patients. The priority for diabetic patients is to maintain a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise and to control blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
